Types of Batteries for your Motorhome
There are different battery types for very different purposes. In this article we will be referring to the "chassis" battery and the "coach" battery. A "chassis" battery starts the engine and runs the automotive systems in either the motor home or the tow vehicle. A "coach" battery powers the lights, furnace, water pump and other 12 volt devices in the coach.Starting Battery - this battery is designed to supply a large amount of current when needed to start the engine on a motor home or tow vehicle, and then be immediately recharged by the vehicles alternator. Deep discharging of this type will drastically shorten the life of the battery.
Marine Starting Battery - This battery is a compromise between the starting battery and the true deep cycle battery. The plates are heavier and more firmly mounted to endure the pounding of a marine application.
Deep Cycle Battery - this battery is built with heavy plates and other internal modifications to enable it to deliver a reletively small amount of current over an extended period of time. Care must be taken when recharging at high amperage settings and limitations exist to prevent plate warping.

If you are ready to change batteries in your Gem Electric Car Please read this before you make a buying decision. I think you need to test each battery under load.. I'm a believer that you should never change only one battery.. when a battery goes sour.. change all six.. you should be operating with the same kind of battery that came in the car... the Delta Q charger is probably programmed for the Deka GEL.. listed as an 8G31 battery.. if you have replaced the one battery with say a AGM batters and the rest are GELs the charger will not charge them fully.. I haven't been able to re-program my Delta Q.. know Old House boater has a friend who knows how to wiggle his nose while standing on his head and can do it.. way above my pay grade..
bottom line.. re-think what you've done to now.. if the batteries are not the same.. there is your problem.. chances if you didn't put the 'like' batteries that were in your car to begin with.. your charger is not charging them all the way up. How to Determine Golf Cart Voltage (36V or 48V):
1) Lift up your golf cart seat to locate the battery compartment.2) Count the number of holes on a battery
- Usually 3, 4 or 6 holes
3) Multiply the number of holes by 2 to determine the golf cart battery voltage
- Each hole/cell is equal to 2 volts
4) Multiply the golf cart battery voltage by the total number of golf cart batteries 36 Volt Golf Cart Example (6V Batteries):
3 holes X 2 volts = 6 volt battery6 volt battery X 6 total batteries = 36 volt system 48 Volt Golf Cart Example (8V Batteries):

What is a Deep Cycle Battery?
Let's begin by providing some important background information regarding your deep cycle batteries. First of all, the batteries found in your electric golf cart are not the same as ones found in your car although they look the same. They couldn’t be more different. The correct term for the batteries found in your golf cart or utility vehicle are deep cycle batteries. Below are some facts about deep cycle batteries:
- Also known as a “flooded” batteries or “wet” batteries
- Deep cycle batteries are not maintenance free
- Contains electrolytes made up of a lead acid and water solution
- Produce an electrical current for long periods of time
- Require routine maintenance (watering and cleaning) to prolong battery life
- Will consume a considerable about of water over their lifespan
The batteries found in your car are known as shallow cycle batteries (SLI) and produce a high current of electricity for a short period of time. For instance, starting you car requires a shallow cycle battery. Do not replace the batteries in your electric golf cart with SLI batteries. Currently 36V and 48V electric golf carts batteries. Currently we recommend the use of Exide, Crown, US and Trojan deep cycle batteries which are also compatible with our current line of 36V and 48V golf cart chargers.

Charging your golf cart batteries properly is absolutely necessary for optimal battery performance and longevity. We want you to get the most out of your golf cart and part of that process involves a safe, proper and full charge. Here are some tips on how to charge a deep cycle battery:
- Familiarize yourself with your battery charger manual
- Recharge your batteries after every use
- Inspect your charger connections; make sure they are free of debris/dirt and wire fraying
- Charge your batteries in a well ventilated area
- Check to make sure the lead plates are submersed in water (see battery watering section)
- Do not add water to the correct level before charging (see battery watering section)
- Make sure all vent caps are tight
- Make sure the charger connector is firmly connected to receptacle

Having a maintenance schedule and being accountable to it will prove beneficial to the life span and performance of your batteries. The ideal schedule should involve the following:
- Check for wire fraying, terminal corrosion, battery leaks and any loose wire connections
- Clean the batteries; the area around the batteries and the terminals
- Check the electrolyte level and add water when necessary
But let’s not forget that there will probably be a time when you are not using your golf cart. This is not the time to think that you do not need to prepare your batteries for winter storage. In short, we prefer you be like the ant who stored up for the winter instead of the grasshopper. Here are some key tips to taking care of your batteries during winter storage.
